Matthew Thomas is now one of the select group of professionals nationwide to earn the Certified Green Professional (CGP) educational designation, identifying him as a builder with the skills and the best strategies for incorporating green building principles into new home and remodeling projects.
The CGP curriculum includes training from leading building industry practitioners and academics on a range of topics, including strategies for integrating green building principles into homes using cost-effective methods of construction.
Coursework is based on the National Green Building Standard, the only ANSI-approved rating system for green homes, developments and remodeling projects. The standard includes sections on energy, water and resource efficiency; indoor environmental quality; lot and site development; and home owner education.
Administered by the National Association of Home Builders, the CGP program is sponsored locally by the Dallas Builders Association.
“I look forward to helping home owners and home buyers in Dallas create green, sustainable homes built to save resources as well as utility costs,” said Matthew Thomas.

TDC—Design, Construction, Real Estate
Administered by the National Association of Home Builders, the CGB program is sponsored locally by the Dallas Builders Association.
“I believe that continuing education is a vital key in servicing homeowners. The more you know and practice the correct building principles the better the overall experience and product is for your homeowners. I’m committed to staying on top of all the latest industry trends, codes, and best building practices so that my homeowners reap the benefits of that knowledge,” says Matthew who has earned over a dozen other industry designations.
To earn the CGB designation, builders must successfully complete a curriculum that incorporates training by leading building industry practitioners and experts on a range of topics, including business management, emerging technologies and market trends. In addition, the builder must have at least two years’ experience in the industry.
After earning the CGB, program graduates are required to sign a code of ethics, maintain insurance and licensing, and complete a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education every three years.
For additional information about the CGB program, visit www.nahb.org.

Getting Stiffed By Bad Contractors Seems to be Getting Common, Hate To Say I Told You So…
You may have seen the recent story on WFAA-TV about the Carrollton teacher who got stiffed by a pool contractor — his name is Danny Jones — to the tune of $6000. Even worse than the money: she’s had a gaping hole in her backyard with dangerous rebar sticking out — ouch if anyone falls in there, as well as a potential lawsuit! My colleagues over at AOL Real Estate tell us that complaints about home improvement is one of the top ten complaints received by the Better Business Bureau.
According to Tracy Anton of the Better Business Bureau, these issues unfortunately happen all too frequently. According to Anton, there is no shortage of complaints filed by homeowners regarding bad contractors: whether it’s dragged-out projects, shoddy work, MIA workers — or all of the above.
I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so. Craigslist is oh so entertaining, but contractors on there are seldom vetted. In fact, most of these so called “Best” lists we see circulating are not vetted. Oh, they may make sure the contractor pays the advertising bill and has no criminal record, but they don’t go out an interview previous customers to ask them about their home building experience.
That’s one reason why we have Hot Builders on this site. Yes, they are all attractive and could give Jesse Metcalfe a run for his money. But more vitally, I know them, personally. I know people who have built homes with them and not just recently but in years past. These are the guys (and soon, gals) who stick around through the recessions and who will come fix your plumbing ten years after building the house. They are, like Mickey and Michael Munir of Shariff-Munir, building second and third homes for clients. They are, like Mark Danuser of Tatum Brown Custom Homes, friends with their clients and building vacation homes for them. They are solid local builders with generations of Dallas family behind them, like Matthew Thomas and Leo Savino. Or they are quite simply so beloved by their happy clients that new homeowners throw parties for them, like Michael Turner of Classic Urban Homes.

Thomas Development and Construction
Matthew Thomas is the kind of man you hear about at cocktail parties, the best-kept home building secret in Dallas. Thomas Development and Construction is all about one man’s passion for working with his hands and brilliant mind, crafting, building homes of quality and distinction that create the kind of stellar reputation that generates cocktail party buzz. A sought-out builder and remodeler for those who want a personal experience, when you build with Thomas Development, it’s as if you are keeping the home building process all in your family.
A son of North Dallas, Matthew Thomas was raised in the very Dallas neighborhoods where he is now building beautiful new custom homes and remodeling ranches from the ‘50s and ‘60s. Oh, he’s in the Park Cities, too, and also venturing out to the suburbs and some second homes. He had an early passion for building in high school. During summers, he worked with his uncle, also a prominent Dallas home builder, and apprenticed with a licensed electrician during college summers. He earned his degree in business, then went to work for a boutique commercial Dallas development company…
Next, like many fine custom builders, Matthew cut his teeth with a large national home builder. He worked every aspect round the clock, from building, construction, managing quality control and warranty. He inspected thousands of homes to make certain that construction was sound and company building standards not just followed, but enshrined. His first year with the company, Matthew earned Top Builder of the Year for homes ranging from $350,000 to $1,000,000 plus homes.
But he wanted more. To gain a 360 degree working knowledge of the industry, Matthew moved into commercial construction for the next eight years. He oversaw the construction of office buildings, warehouses, prisons, hotels, condominiums, apartments, retail buildings, commercial parking garages and industrial projects. His experience gives him a unique edge among most homebuilders: commercial construction uses cutting edge materials, complex design and construction. Deadlines and budgets are tighter than in residential, and commercial contractors are continually upgrading with the most innovative building techniques.
That passion for custom building finally brought him back full circle, to the residential side. Matthew started his own residential and commercial building company, Thomas Development and Construction, in 2008. The company unifies his years of extensive construction experience with his gift of youthful energy and passion. Whether he’s remodeling a home from the studs up or building a dream home, Matthew Thomas remains dedicated to helping his clients achieve their home goals on time and on budget.
“I want my clients to live in their homes and love them with the same passion I had growing up in my family home, “ says Matthew. “Sound construction, beautiful design and an attention to detail are our first priority. It isn’t about the quantity of homes, it’s about the quality, always.”
For his clients, he says, only the very best will do!
We hope that everyone had a great holiday. We certainly did at TDC. We also had a great 2011 and wanted to share with you some of the areas we’ve been working in around town as well as some features of a few exciting projects we had the privilege to complete this last year.
Downtown, Ritz-Carlton Residences–This project was a blank canvas that needed to be finished out to reflect the owner’s style. One of the unique standouts was a master closet with a vintage chandelier, glass front drawers, book-matched millwork, and back-lit shoe racks.
Southlake–We transformed a kitchen in Southlake by expanding the existing space into a bright and open kitchen with vaulted ceilings. The cabinet package consisted of top-end hardware and was constructed out of a combination of lyptus wood and maple.
Park Cities–We did several home renovations in the Park Cities last year. One job included an all white Carrara marble bathroom with European style full overlay cabinets and German plumbing fixtures.
Lake Highlands–TDC renovated two homes in the same Lake Highlands neighborhood in 2011. This tight knit Moss Haven community has become quite popular due to the excellent school district. Many families are seeking to add more value to their home and the growing neighborhood by adding on and or renovating the existing space.
TDC also completed residential projects in the Bluffview and Preston Hollow areas and currently have projects in progress in the Park Cities, the White Rock area, and near Strait Lane and Royal Lane.
D Magazine–TDC finished out D Magazine’s supplemental photo studio/office space. Additionally, TDC worked with D Magazine and the city of Dallas to assist in the process of putting the big red “D” logo on the top of the St. Paul building downtown.
Mathes and Co. Events–Mathes and Co. is a premier event planning company in Dallas. They needed space for their ever-expanding team. TDC finished out office space to meet their needs.
And here’s what some of our clients had to say about us in 2011.
“The kitchen looks amazing and we are super impressed! Thanks for putting up with us and for doing such a fantastic job. I know this was a challenge but you have exceeded our expectations of what the space could be. Thank you very much!”
“I had such an awesome experience with Thomas Development and Construction.”
“The actual construction took 8 weeks total, and Matthew did an astonishing amount during that time – took our kitchen and master bath down to the studs and completely rebuilt them, took down walls in our living room and dining area, put up a wall to enclose part of our front room as an office, added speakers/sound system, moved a wall in the laundry room, replaced most of the light fixtures in the house and added tons of can lights, replaced or added several doors (interior and exterior), re-textured and repainted most of the house, added new trim/molding to most of the house, redid the wood floors and replaced the carpet in the bedrooms, and did some major things in our kids’ bathroom and our half-bathroom. And he did it within the budget we had given him! We are 100% pleased with the outcome – we love our house so much.”
“Thanks a lot. We couldn’t be more pleased with everything.”
Thank you to all our friends and clients for a great 2011. We’re already hard at work in 2012 and look forward to sharing more with you throughout the year. Please continue to follow us on Facebook and Twitter and we’ll do our best to update it more frequently. Happy New Year to All!
